Question:

I do have a question about the tongues, are they of two kinds? i.e 1- can peoples understand, only God understand? 2- is it possible that one person can speak 50 tongues?

Answer:

There are three kinds of tongues.
The personal tongue that everyone speaks.
This kind of tongues comes as a result of being Baptized by the Holy Spirit.
We call this the evidence of having been baptized by the Holy Spirit (or being filled by the Holy Spirit).
This is the kind of tongues that we pray without understanding. But Paul says if we pray to God asking Him he will make us understand it.
We can use this kind of tongues, to pray, worship or even rage spiritual warfare (i.e. rebuke the devil, deliverance...).
This is the personal tongue that Paul says that when we speak it, we speak to God and not to man, we edify ourselves when we do it (i.e. strengthen ourselves spiritually...).
Any way, often when you don't understand what you are saying, at least you would know what you are doing in tongues.. i.e. praising, just praying to God, or warfare against the devil..
Tongues number 2 is for some people. This is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit Paul talks about in Corinthian 12. Sometimes during praise and worship in the church, someone get a message from the Lord in tongues for the church. So the person will say it loudly. This is the kind of tongues that needs interpretation. Than when this kind of tongues is released, someone who has the gift of interpretation will receive by the Holy Spirit the interpretation of these tongues. So once the person has delivered the tongue message, the interpreter will interpret saying: The Lord is saying...(and the interpretation).
Often it could be the same person who interpret.
This is the kind of tongues that Paul says needs an interpreter. And he says that if there is no one to interpret, the person who sees a message in tongues in His spirit, from the Lord, should not deliver the message if there is no interpreter in the church. For what is the point if the people shall not understand. And he says, it is better, when if there is no one to interpret, to prophesy. i.e. When you prophesy, you are delivering a message from the Lord straight in a language people will understand.
you were at times speaking straight in English, and at times you would pray in tongues a bit, than continue in English. When you did that, the English came as the interpretation of the tongues. Sometimes you were just praying in tongues to edify and strengthen yourself.
N.B. Tongues + interpretation = prophesy.
So prophesy could come in two ways, either tongues from the Lord + prophesy, or straight prophesy. So when there is no interpreter, the tongues alone will not benefit anyone, so we might, through the Holy Spirit prophesy directly.
If when you and me are praying individually during praise and worship or during our personal time with the Lord, we keep on shitting from tongues to normal language. And often, without realizing, what we say in normal language could be in fact what the Lord is leading us to pray in tongues.
Many times, when we don't know what to pray, the Holy Spirit will leads and help us by praying in tongues.
That is what it says in Roman 8:26. For when we don't know what to pray as we should, the Holy Spirit will help us, by praying through us according to the will of us with groanings..
Any way, tongues nbr two, needs an interpreter, other wise there is no use in uttering them in church and it is better to prophesy directly in normal language. That is why he says it is better in this case to prophesy.
Many Christians take this sentence of Corinthian 14, concerning this kind of tongues, to say that in church services, we should not speak in tongues.
That is not what the Bible says. It says, as far as tongues of this kind is concerned, (2nd) kind i.e. a message from God to us, it should not be spoken if there is no interpreter.
This has nothing to do with tongues nbr one (1st) , which is individual tongues, from us to God. We can pray this kind of tongues either individually anywhere, any time, or corporately at church.
Tongues nbr 3, is rare. It is when God use our tongues to speak foreign earthly languages as it happened at Pentecost.
This is a miracle. Sometimes God could use our tongues to reach other people with their own language. I repeat this is rare and is a miracle.
So finally, as far as tongues is concerned, we speak one tongue altogether and not many.
Only in the case of nbr 3, when God wants to use our tongue as a miracle for a certain purpose.
So I believe we speak one heavenly tongue myself.
There are some people who say I speak several tongues myself, 3 or 4 or ...
Sorry but this is fantasy and not serious. For even if it was true, how would they Know?? And who cares anyway, as what matters is that we speak in tongues which is very beneficial.
So one tongue(1st) for the personal individual gift which we use to speak to God in all kinds of prayer.
One tongue (2nd)when God speak to us his church, which requires interpretation.
And the third kind (3rd) is our tongues that God use to speak other earthly languages for a certain purpose.
